Brewing coffee is an art form, and there are many different methods to choose from. From pour-over to French press, cold brew to espresso — each brewing method produces a unique cup of coffee depending on the type of beans used, the grind size and the amount of water added. Here’s a look at some of the popular methods for brewing coffee.
Pour-Over
Pour-over is one of the most popular ways to brew coffee. All you need is your favorite whole bean coffee, hot water, a kettle or pour-over device and grounds filter. The process requires you to slowly pour heated water over coffee grounds in order to extract their flavors and aromas into your cup or carafe. This method allows for excellent control over extraction time, ensuring that all notes are properly expressed in your final product.
French Press
The French press is another extremely popular way of brewing coffee. This method uses coarsely ground beans placed directly in a pot or carafe with hot water, stirred and left to steep for several minutes before being pressed down through a plunger filter. It is simple to use and yields full-bodied cups with bold flavors since it doesn’t involve paper filters that can absorb some of the delicate oils that create flavor in the cup.
Plunger/Press: AeroPress
Relatively new, the maker of Aerobie Frisbee (Alan Adler) created and launched the AeroPress in 2005. The AeroPress is plastic and comes in 3 parts. A filter sits in a coffee basket at the bottom of the brew chamber. Coffee grounds rest in the brew chamber where hot water is added then immerses/steeps the coffee. To extract the coffee, a plunger is pressed down creating air pressure to force brewed coffee through a filter and into a cup.
Espresso
Espresso is perhaps the most challenging way to brew coffee as it requires precise amounts of finely ground beans along with complex equipment like an espresso machine with a pressure gauge and portafilter handle. Despite its complexity, if made correctly espresso offers unparalleled experiences with intense sweetness balanced by syrupy consistency that often has powerful notes like dark chocolate, caramel or nuts — truly something special!
No matter which method you choose — whether traditional brewed or specialty drinks like lattes— there’s no wrong way to enjoy your favorite cup of joe!
